My family and I went to watch Memoirs of a Geisha yesterday at GSC, 1 Utama. I think this is the first time in a LONG, LONG time that I’ve actually watched a movie with both my parents. The last time I watched a movie with my mum, it was at TGV, 1 Utama. When the trailers were playing, she found it too loud, so she took out a tissue, split it in half, and plugged her ears!! *sigh* I wonder if I’ll ever be like that..
I found the movie pretty good, although the book was still better (in my opinion). It’s the story of a young girl, Chiyo, who is sold by her father to a geisha house. She attempts running away several times to find her sister, who was also sold at the same time. Finally, the head of the house decides not to let her train to be a geisha, as she has caused such trouble, but to become a slave instead. One day, she meets a man on a bridge, who buys her an ice cup. From that day forth, she decides to be a geisha, so that she can be with him again. She becomes the protege of the most famous geisha, Mameha, who trains her in the art of geisha, and eventually becomes a well known geisha (where her Geisha name is Sayuri).
While watching the movie, I felt so impressed by Michelle Yeoh. She played the part of Mameha, and I thought that she did an excellent job. Am I biased because she is a fellow Malaysian?
Her command of English was much better compared with Gong Li (Hatsumomo) and Zhang Ziyi (Chiyo/Sayuri), although they did well too. Ken Watanabe (the guy on the bridge) was also memorable in his role.
Although I probably wouldn’t watch the movie again, I do recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. You’ll enjoy it!
