About a week ago, my mum told me just before I left work, that my aunt had given birth to a baby girl. So, that’s pretty standard, right? A new addition to the family, nothing to gossip about. Or so I thought… My mum continued by saying, “Oh, and she gave birth in the condo.” ?!?!?
Here’s what actually happened. The night before, at around 9 o’clock, her water bag burst. She didn’t know that it was her water bag, because she had no contractions. Also, my uncle told her that it was probably just her urine. The next day, she even walked the children to school, and then took a cab to her friend’s condo. At the condo, she started having a stomach ache, and this was when she thought that the baby might really be coming.
She quickly took a cab back to her house, then told my uncle to get dressed (he was taking a shower) and take her to the hospital. While he was changing, she felt that it was the moment of truth. She lay down on the floor, and gave birth just like that. So freaky!! My uncle called my mum in a panic, asking what he should do. After consulting with her friend who’s a doctor, she told my uncle that he had to tie and cut the umbilical cord! He had to grit his teeth, and get the job done, afterwhich they WALKED to the guard house and stood there waiting for a cab.
Can you imagine that? Haha, my first thought was…’So, their gynae fees must be much cheaper then.’ Some of my colleagues said that they wouldn’t have tied and cut the umbilical cord, they would have just gone to the hospital with it still attached. For those of you who are planning on home births (my brother thought it was kind of cool!) or for unplanned home births, please note that the umbilical cord should be tied / cut, otherwise the mother or baby could bleed to death.
Just something to think about…
