This day only rolls around once in four years, so it has to be remembered in my blog! Some reflections about the date.

For people that are born on the 29th of February, do they celebrate their birthday during non-leap years on Feb 28th, or Mar 1st? I imagine that they like being born on the 29th, it makes them special. I like telling people that the area code on my IC is 71, and they always ask me, ‘Where were you born??’

Are there any systems that are built where people never considered the 29th of Feb? I got my office season parking yesterday, and tried it out today. But it didn’t work. Coincidence? Probably…

In other news, Malaysia is gearing up for elections, as the big date draws near. It’s been pretty interesting, probably because I wasn’t eligible to vote during the last elections. You need to be registered 6 months before the elections, and I was in Australia at that time. Do you know where you’re voting yet? You can check it out here. I got the school right behind my house, it’s going to be a breeze to get there.

Chew Mei Fun is organizing some sort of official opening for the Multi-Purpose court near my house tonight. Supposedly, there is going to be a Lion Dance, or something like that. It might be interesting to pop by and see what she has to say. The candidate that is running against her will be Tony Pua. I’ve been reading his blog occasionally ever since a friend of mine mentioned that he may be the one opposing Chew Mei Fun. I must say, I’ve been quite impressed with the things that he talks about (posts from awhile ago, the recent ones are just about the elections!), although a lot of his economic posts are way above my head!

Yesterday, as I was watching American Idol, there was this advert shown during the break. It features a few different people, talking about Malaysia and how it’s become a better place. One statement that really cracked me up was from an Indian guy saying, “Malaysia has become so much safer. I feel safe walking around at night.”. I wonder where he’s staying? Perhaps in some high-security condo. Who do they think they’re fooling with these statements? We’re not stupid. At least tell us something more believable than that!

When all is said and done, I hope that at the end of the elections, we end up with good leaders, not those just that can talk, but can also do the walk.

I know lots of people think that Valentine’s Day is totally overrated, and it’s just an excuse for merchandisers to hike up the price of their products / dining experiences. For me, I’m of the opinion that big, expensive gestures are a waste of money, because we can show our love for our significant other in many other more meaningful ways, but small gestures are always appreciated.

Yesterday, at 5.30pm, T messaged me to ask me out for dinner. He showed up at about 7.30pm with the bag we normally use whenever we go shopping (yes, we’re environmentalists whenever we can remember to bring me the bag!). He put it against my arm and said he had a present for me. It was cold, so my first guess was ‘Ice cream!’. I like NZN, which was why I guessed that.

But, he pulled out of the bag…

The first time he ever brought me flowers! I don’t really love flowers, but somehow, the act of a guy bringing a girl flowers is so romantic, to me anyway. So, Mr. T, thank you for the lovely surprise, and Happy Valentine’s Day to you and everyone else!

Everyone who has watched Jaws must remember Roy Scheider as the police chief. In today’s news, it was reported that Roy Scheider has passed away at the age of 75. I guess he lived a long life, so the news isn’t so terrible as compared to some of the more recent deaths (Heath Ledger, Steve Irwin, and some lesser known stars, Brad Renfro and Jonathan Brandis).

Perhaps it’s because I’m growing older, but the news of a celebrity’s death seems more disturbing to me now compared to last time. I guess we all become more aware of how short life is as we age. The other day, during our family Chinese New Year reunion lunch, I was carrying my baby cousin. One of uncles said, ‘Do you realise, when she’s your age, you’ll be 51!’. My jaw dropped…and I couldn’t believe it. When she’s my age, she’ll probably regard me as one of those old aunties.

Anyway, I think I first noticed Roy Scheider in the sci-fi series Seaquest DSV, where he played the role of captain of the ship. I always have this image of Roy as a grandfatherly image, perhaps because that was his relationship in the series between himself and one of his co-stars, Jonathan Brandis (who committed suicide in 2003). Then later, when I watched Jaws again, I made the connection that it was the same guy in Seaquest.

It’s funny how people are overlooked in smaller roles, and then when they become famous, you watch them in those older films and then you’re like, ‘Hey, this is so-and-so!’. The actor that I remember is Pierce Brosnan. He only became more famous as his character as James Bond, as well as the suave thief in The Thomas Crown Affair. Later on, I watched Mrs. Doubtfire again, and then I noticed that the boyfriend of the wife was Pierce Brosnan!

I’m sure another actor that this will happen to is Eddie Cahill. He guest starred in Friends as Rachel’s boyfriend for a few episodes, but only hit the big time as a detective in CSI: NY.

Back to the topic of our mortality, it’s been mentioned time and time again, but we should all treasure each day, and treat it as if each day were our last day. I’m sure you’ve been asked the question, ‘If today was your last day on earth, how would you spend it?’. How different were your answers compared to how you spend each day at this point in time?

OK, this post is for Eel, because she’s been bugging me to update my blog. So, you should feel honored that I’m blogging! :p

Well, in my last post I was saying that I wanted to start doing different things with T during weekends. That night, I started going online to see what other things we could do. I found a waterfalls site which is actually pretty good. It lists down all the different waterfalls around the area, and rates the difficulties along with comments about how easy / tough / commercialized the waterfalls are. T didn’t seem too interested in that, he said that it wouldn’t be fun with just the two of us. I don’t know what’s the difference between going on holiday vs waterfalling with just the two of us. Seems the same to me!

Anyway, I asked him to suggest something different, and he said, ‘Let’s go jogging!’. Ugh..I’m so not a jogging person, but I agreed anyway. So, early the next morning (it was Thaipusam), we got ready to go jogging at the TTDI park. When we reached there, I started jogging for about…five minutes, and I got tired. Heheh, I told you I’m not a jogging person! I ended up walking briskly for three rounds of the park. Hey, it’s still exercise, right? I kept telling T to jog ahead of me and he could catch up to me in the next round, but he insisted on sticking with me to keep me company, which I thought was rather sweet of him. Overall, I guess it was quite a successful outing. Now, the only thing I need to do now is to get my stamina up!

So, the next thing that was on our list was making my version of CNY cookies. I didn’t want to make cookies, because there are lots of cookies during CNY. Instead, I googled for a chocolate cornflakes recipe, which can be found here.

Ingredients needed:
One bar of baking chocolate (I used Van Houten, yummy!)
About 3/4 of a big box of Kelloggs cornflakes
A few tablespoons of butter
A cup full of honey

Step 1 is to melt the chocolate. I didn’t want to melt it over the stove, because I kept on reading about people burning the chocolate, etc. The easiest way was to break the chocolate into smaller pieces, and microwave it for about 1 1/2 minutes. Easy peasy!

Then, add the butter, honey and chocolate into the pan and stir until it’s well combined. Those are T’s helping hands, btw!

When it’s well mixed together, add in the cornflakes, and mix once more!

Finally, just put little blobs on the foil covered plates, and leave in the fridge to cool (I wanted to put the cornflakes in those mini paper cupcake holders, but T said it was too much work. I thought that since he was already helping me, I wouldn’t push my luck too far!). For those of you with a sweet tooth, this is a really good recipe, and it’s so easy and fast to finish. Everyone who tried it loved it, and my dad even had two pieces which is the ultimate compliment coming from him!
