I watched Star Trek last Saturday at 1Utama, with T, my bro & SIL. None of us are Trekkies, so before the movie started, we were discussing what the tagline for the movie was. Somehow, the phrase ‘To Infinity and Beyond!’ was in my head, and when I told them, they all agreed that it must be the tagline. Hahah, how wrong we were. After awhile, T remarked that that was the tagline for Toy Story! And SIL came up with the correct phrase, which was ‘To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before’. So, obviously you can see that we’re definitely not Trekkies!

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the movie! No worries whether you’re a Star Trek fan or not, it was really good. The only Star Trek that I watched previously was a few episodes of The Next Generation, where Patrick Stewart was the captain. It was interesting to link up my memories of the series together with the movie. Parts like “Beam me up, Scottie!” and the character Sulu were floating around in my head as I watched the movie. It got a tiny bit confusing towards the end, when the young Spock and old Spock met. To me, it’s just not possible, because any action that young Spock would take, might affect old Spock. But apparently there’s this whole thing about an alternate reality and the two Spocks are not linked anymore….Anyway, yes, one of the better movies that I’ve watched this year.

After dinner, we were walking around in the new wing, and we noticed some treadmills set up in the middle. Being the Malaysians that we are, we wandered over to see what was happening. There was a treadmill challenge being held, to get into the Malaysian Book of Records. Something about running on the treadmills for 24 hours, or something like that. Hahah, I wasn’t really paying attention. Anyway, the emcee managed to convince T to take part, you get a free 100 plus drink and a nice cert, all for working out for 5 minutes! So, after the required 5 minutes, he walked away with this.

I might have considered taking part if it wasn’t right after our yummy Pasta Zanmai dinner, but then again, maybe not…

This must be a new record, I haven’t blogged on this blog since December, and it’s now March! Well, hopefully there will be a lot more posts in the future. I’ve decided to stop posting on my other blog, it’s just too much trouble having another blog to maintain. Add to the fact that I’ve got 2 others where I’m a joint contributor, and it just becomes such a hassle! So, I’ve decided to stick to this one which will be my main one from now on. I’ve got lots of plans for it, how to merge my blogs, and upgrading it, and theme-ing it, but again, who knows if I’ll actually do all that work? One main problem is that it’s on an old server, which doesn’t support PHP5, so that’s one big hurdle in the upgrading of the blog. For the meantime, I’ve just switched themes, the old one was starting to feel a bit…out-dated. It’s really simple now, but that’s the way I like it. Most people probably won’t see any difference if they’re using an RSS feeder, but it makes me feel better!

Alright, so what have I been up to lately? Definitely too much to fit in this one post, so I’ll just pick one.

I watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button about a week ago. It’s about a man (Brad Pitt, of course!) who was born old and ages backwards. His mother died giving birth to him, and when his father looked at him, the father thought that he was a monster, as he looked almost mummy-like, with old wrinkled skin, cataracts, arthritis, and more. So, his father took him to an old folks’ home and left him on the stairs. The housekeeper, a black woman who was unable to have her own children, took him in and looked after him.

In this home, he meets a young girl, Daisy (played by Cate Blanchett), who becomes the love of his life later on. It’s a very touching story, moving between stories of Benjamin and Daisy, throughout their “growing up / growing down?” phases. The main part of the storyline is how they keep bumping into each other at different ages. They finally get together when they both look about 40, and live happily together for awhile. However, Daisy gets pregnant, and Benjamin realizes that they can never really have a life together. He’ll never be able to be a proper father to the child, because as she grows up, he will become younger and younger, and he’ll end up being more of a playmate than a father. So, he leaves and asks Daisy to find a proper father for their daughter.

As I watched the movie, I really felt the fact that love is such a precious, and in some cases, fleeting thing. If you’re lucky enough to find a love of your life, grab hold and don’t let go! It would have been so tough for Benjamin and Daisy to have a relationship, knowing that there could never be a happy ending, as their age gap would keep on widening more and more. Anyway, I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t watched it yet, so I’ll leave off here. I can tell you that I did cry at the ending, though, it was that moving!

T and I went to watch Stardust on Saturday. It’s not a very widely publicized show, but it’s based on a book by Neil Gaiman, and has actors like Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert de Niro, and Claire Danes, so I thought it might be worth seeing. We had free vouchers from my company, and since there was nothing else I wanted to watch, I picked that show. I tried to book shows using the TGV website on Thursday, but they only had showtimes until Friday. On Friday, I checked again, and still, they only had shows until that night! See, this is why I normally buy tickets outright, and normally from GSC. Anyway, on Saturday morning, I managed to book two tickets for the afternoon show.

We went to the gold class counter to pick up the tickets, and I told the lady our reservation number. She entered it, and it came up with ‘No Reservation Found’. Oh oh…I thought, “Stupid System!”. She tried entering it again, and then she looked at me. “This is reservation for TGV.” I thought to myself, “Yeah, and…??” Then it dawned on me, we were at the GSC counter. Hehe…*blush*.
Anyway, we got ourselves over to TGV, and we decided to go in early. Sat down in the cinema, and it was so empty! Maybe about twenty people in total. After all the adverts, the show started…and it was ‘The Last Legion’! Turns out we had the wrong cinema as well. I guess it just wasn’t our day.

We finally got into the right cinema, and we had missed maybe 10 minutes of the start. But overall, I think it was an awesome show! I don’t want to spoil it for you, but if you insist on spoiling it yourself, Wiki’s got the plot of Stardust pretty much covered. Also, for the ladies, the main actor, Charlie Cox is pretty cute! In the beginning, he didn’t really catch my attention, in fact, I thought he was rather geeky with a good-boy look. But midway through the movie, he gets a ‘makeover’ and then I started to think he was pretty cute!
I walked out of the cinema feeling pretty satisfied with the movie, and wondering if I should start reading Neil Gaiman books. I did try to read one last time, but somehow, I never got into it. If anyone has any opinions on which one I should try, drop me a comment!
